Gender Equity Self Audit Tool

In 1972, the U. S. government enacted a federal law that requires gender equity for boys and girls in every educational program that receives federal funding. The law addresses 10 key areas (access to higher learning, career education, education for pregnant and parenting students, employment, learning environment, math and science, sexual harassment, standardized testing and technology and athletes). This document focuses on how boys and girls are equally treated in interscholastic athletic programs and services. Unfortunately, thousands of schools are out of compliance across the country. The NFHS Gender Equity Self Audit is a tool to assist you in assessing your compliance with this law.

The Self Audit tool explains the interest and abilities component of Title IX. The audit tool looks for proportionality, the school district's history of adding sports and if the athletic interests are being met with the current programs. The Office for Civil Rights can review upon request any information pertinent to the determination if both genders are being treated equally. If you have any specific compliance questions regarding Title IX, you should contact your local Office for Civil Rights.
