Bengtson sets Minnesota winning streak record; then loses

Mitch Bengtson, a junior wrestler at St. Cloud (Minnesota) Apollo High School, set the state record of 179 consecutive victories in the Minnesota State High School League Class 3A state tournament semifinals on March 2, only to have the streak snapped in the finals the following night.

Bengtson, who wrestles in the 126-pound weight class and had won three consecutive state titles entering the 2012 state tournament, lost 2-1 in the finals when Sam Brancale of Eden Prairie High School executed a reversal with four seconds left in the match. Interestingly, Bengtson defeated Brancale, 1-0, in the 2011 119-pound state quarterfinals.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ National High School Sports Record Book, Bengtson’s 179-match winning streak ranks ninth all-time nationally.
