Steering his Wichita Falls (Texas) High School football team to an exciting come-from-behind 53-49 win over Denton (Texas) High School on September 30, quarterback Dylan Sheffield lit up the airways with a state-record 683 passing yards.
With just 28 seconds left in the game and his team trailing, 49-46, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior connected on an 81-yard touchdown pass with receiver Chance Garay to secure the victory. Sheffield completed 35-of-50 passes, with seven going for touchdowns. The game-winning catch gave the 5-8, 160-pound Garay a school-record 270 receiving yards.
In addition, Sheffield’s performance ranks second all time nationally, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ National High School Sports Record Book. David Koral of Pacific Palisades (California) High School passed for 764 yards in a game with Van Nuys (California) Grant High School in 2000.
