Szczecina ties national record

On September 9, Saint John (Indiana) Lake Central senior linebacker Tyler Szczecina joined two other 11-player football players as national record-holders when he returned an interception for a touchdown in a game with Crown Point (Indiana) High School.

By doing so, Szczecina upped his season total to four, which ties the national record for most interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations’ National High School Sports Record Book, Szczecina is tied with Mike Galliger of Hartford (South Dakota) West Central High School, who accomplished that feat during the 2007 season, and Jacob Edelman of Stanwood (Iowa) North Cedar High School, who did the same two years later in the 2009 season.

Through the Crown Point game, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Szczecina was tenacious on defense as he had collected a team-high 53 tackles (including eight for loss), and helped lead the Indians to a 5-0 record, including 3-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play.
