In Hopewell (Pennsylvania) High School’s 24-14 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA football playoff victory over Murrysville (Pennsylvania) Franklin Regional High School on November 5, Rushel Shell ran 33 times for 135 yards. In the process, he tied Emmitt Smith and Steve Worster with his 28th consecutive game of 100 or more rushing yards.
The National High School Sports Record Book published by the NFHS lists Smith and Worster as being tied for third, trailing Billy Sims’ national mark of 38 100-yard outings in a row set in the 1970s.
Shell is a highly recruited, 6-foot, 217-pound junior tailback who once rushed for 349 yards in a game and also handles the punting chores for Hopewell. The all-time record for 100-yard rushing games is 55 set last season by Kevin Parks Jr., of Mount Ulla (North Carolina) West Rowan.
